When you are drawing the fashion figure there are always some tricky aspects that hold back your otherwise brilliant ideas. The best drawings communicate your ideas clearly and accurately. You can click on any of these links for more information about how to draw fashion figures especially faces, hands and feet.

There is heaps more on the internet as well as in the Kangan Institute library.

D group 28/20/11
Hi there, this observational drawing was of a black lace dress. You need your fine line pens to do this. Firstly plan out your drawing so it fills the page, then draw the garments using your fine line pens. Remember to vary the strength of lines to reflect the different strengths of black. You need to represent the lace with marks that resemble the pattern, because it is black on black you will need to start off with a cross hatched back ground (see the drawing at the bottom) you will also need to lightly indicate the limbs of the mannequin.

D group 21/10/11
Today we did a pastel and coloured pencil observational drawing of this outfit, I have a handout with some advice for doing pastel drawings so ask for that if you missed class. Please draw it on A3 paper and map out your drawing carefully taking note of proportions before you begin. Please draw the white mannequin as skin coloured.

D group 16/10/11
There are 2 things to do for this week, the first one is a trade drawing of this pretty little tiered skirt from Erica. There is a diagram from the white board down below- have a look before you begin.
The second task is an observational drawing of this outfit on the manequin. You should allow an hour and a half to do this and you should fill an A3 page (no tiny ones please) The drawing should be completed using Tria markers (you will need both greys and black). Layer the colours to achieve tonal variation and use different depths of grey together to create depth and interest in the surface. I do have a handout which you can collect from me in class. Please hand in on Friday 23rd October.

B Group design class 19-9-11
The first garment on the page today is Theresa's mother's dress, it has a dart coming from the side seams to just under the bust and another one going from the bust down to level with the hip. There are splits to the waist on both sides and there is a press dud & hook and eye fastening on the right hand side. It has raglan sleeves and comes down too mid calf.
(scroll to the bottom of this entry to see what else happened today)
This is Salotte's skirt. It has a slightly gathered waist, a yoke & knife pleats. Refer to the drawing in red on the whiteboard to help you get the pleats right.
We read the 1950-59 handout and we also had one on Renee Gruau, a fashion artist who made his name in the 1950's. We then did a fashion drawing of a 1950's style garment on A3 paper.

D group design class 16-91-11
Today we did a trade drawing of Aurelia's skirt. It is black, made of a lycra jersey so very tight fitting and it has horizontal tucks across the front. It comes to mid thigh and she wears it so it comes just above the waist. A very simple design. Use a set square to make sure the lines are straight and annotate correctly
The other thing we did in class was look at the development of Arabella Ramsay work. By now you should have 3 designs worked out and traced onto your fashion templates, you should also have your trade drawings started on your trade templates.... Please always remember to use templates when you do trade and fashion sketches.
We also started drawing up a trade drawing of your personal skirt. Below is a list of styles you can use. Remember to keep it within your capability level. Stretch yourself but not too much.
I hope this helps you keep up, please communicate with me regarding your absences if you are away and make sure you hand in your work so I can mark it. Cheers, Serena
PS- Make sure you complete your 5 sketches from fashion week and make a note on each of them about the elements and principles of design (see Stecker) also bring your watercolours next week and your water colour paper. Thank you.

D group trade sketch- 2/9/11
The first skirt today is from Anna, It has an invisible zip fastening on the left had side and a side seam pocket on the right hand side. It has a "paper bag" top with a tie belt. There are 4 tucks in the waistline and it comes to the mid- thigh. Trade drawing please (front only)
This is the back view of Anca's skirt. As you can see there us an interesting treatment of the band with buttons & tab at the top. It is knee length and there is quite a lot of top stitching in it.

D group trade sketch- 26/8/11
Today we drew Lisa's skirt, front and back. Points to note are that both front and back should be the same shape, the underlying shape is an A-line & with the invisible zip at the centre back you must draw a seam dropping down from the zip. The skirt comes down to the mid-thigh. Enjoy!

B group Frances's knit dress from the 1970s
This garment has a split up the left hand side and is shaped, (no lycra). The V neck has a binding of about a centimetre & there is no topstitching on the garment. The sleeves are just above the wrist and the hem is just above the knee. We drew a garment from the 1920s this week on A3. Next week we will be doing the 1930s so you can do some research for that now & prepare your templates now. Please remember to bring your Stecker to class.
B Group garment with a story Neville's hoodie
This hoodie belongs to Neville, he bought it in Sydney. It has neoprene in the hood and the cuff to give the body... little bit tricky because it is black. Trade drawing please!
